As part of their Literacy work, pupils in Year 4 have been writing instructions for making things.



Objective – To write instructions on how to make a sock puppet.

How to make a Shark Puppet

You need: a sock, wire, felt, a felt tip pen, glue scissors.

1. Find an old sock.

2. Pick up some white felt and cut out a strip of it.

3. Cut the white felt into about ten triangle shapes. These will be the teeth.

4. Stick the teeth on the bottom and top of the shark's mouth.

5. Cut out two circles of black felt.

6. Stick the circles where the eyes will go.

7. Cut out two slightly bigger circles out of pale blue felt.

8. Stick these where the gills will go.

9. Draw black lines on these circles.

10. Get some wire and bend it into a shape of a back fin.

11. Get some dark blue felt and cut two shapes for the back fin.

12. Stick both pieces of felt on either side of the wire.

13. Stick the fin on the top of the sharks back.

14. Cut out two pieces of wire and bend them into triangle shapes.

15. Cut two pieces of triangular shaped felt and stick them on either side of the wires. Make two of these.

16. Stick these fins on the shark, sticking one on each side.

Variations: You can also make a snake, a dog, a cat, or a monster.

Instructions on how to make a Reindeer Puppet

What you need: a sock, a red button, brown felt, red felt, glue sequins, thread, needle, scissors.

1. Get a sock.

2. Get some sequins and glue.

3. Use the glue to stick the sequins on to make the eyes.

4. Sew the red button onto the sock for the nose.

5. Cut out a tongue from the red felt and stick it on the sock.

6. Cut the brown felt into two strips and stick them onto the sock as antlers.

7. When the glue is dry, put it on your hand and have fun!

Variations – You could also make a horse, a mouse, or maybe a goat.

How to make a Snake Puppet

What you need: felt, glue, black marker, sock, scissors, and sequins.

1. Collect your sock.

2. Cut the snakes tongue from red felt and stick onto the sock, where the mouth will be.

3. Cut out small black eyes from black felt.

4. Stick sequins onto the black eyes then stick these on the sock.

5. Start to stick yellow and black felt onto the sock. Yellow in thin stripes and black in wide stripes.

6. When these are all stuck on, draw on scales with the black marker pen.

Variations: You can make any creation! You can even make a dragon, or an angel. Just use different materials on your sock.
