As part of their History work, pupils in Year 2 have been writing about the life of Florence Nightingale.
Florence Nightingale

In 1820 a girl called Florence Nightingale was born. She was named Florence after the city. She lived in Derbyshire. Florence belonged to a rich family. Her parents also owned a big posh house but Florence still wasn't happy. No matter what her parents tried. They taught her sewing, music and reading. All she wanted was to be taught maths. She begged and begged but her father said "No". She asked her father again, he got very annoyed and said alright.

Florence was sent on holiday to try and take her mind off it. So she decided to become a nurse. Florence found a hospital and trained every day for a year. Florence was sent to Scutari along with 38 other nurses. When she arrived she was appalled at the conditions of the hospital. Initially the nurses were not allowed to treat any patients, because the doctors didn't thing they required any help, but soon there was another war, and there were lots more patients, so the doctors had to ask for help.

The soldiers were not dying from their wounds they were dying because of the dirty conditions. Florence then taught all the other nurses about cleanliness. She made sure everyone wore a clean uniform everyday.

Florence set up a training school for nurses at St. Thomas hospital. Florence carried on her work until she died at the age of ninety.

Florence Nightingale

In 1820 a girl called Florence Nightingale was born. She was called Florence after the city of Florence where she was born. She didn't go to school because her father taught her reading, sewing and music but he didn't teach her mathematics. But Florence kept on bothering him so her dad sighed and said "Alright" but when Parthenope, her younger sister heard that, she wanted to do mathematics so Florence's dad sighed again and said "Yes".

One day when Florence was walking in her garden she was dreaming that God was saying to help the sick people. Her first patient was her dog Cap and the other patients were her dolls. When she grew up she told her mum and dad that she wanted to be a nurse but her mum and dad thought that it was no job for a lady so they sent her away on holiday but she didn't forget because she found a hospital, where for one year she can train to be a nurse.

When she came back her friend Sidney Herbert told her that France, Britain and Turkey were fighting Russia so Florence Nightingale took thirty-eight nurses to Scutari hospital.

When she got there she was shocked because there were no beds, it was dark, there were no bandages, there were rats on the floor and it had a terrible smell. So Florence got to work and killed all the rats, got beds, got clean sheets, painted the walls and made sure that the surgeons had clean knives to operate.

When she got there lots of people were waiting for her but she didn't want it so she pretended that she fell in the water but she didn't. When she came back, she was training other ladies to be nurses. In 1910 when Florence was 90 she died.
