Our Cross Country teams have been busy this term, taking part in the Catholic Primary Schools Cross Country Championships and in a series of competitions for the Cross Country Grand Prix.
Four teams entered the Catholic Primary Schools Cross Country Championships held at King George's Playing Fields during October and November. The Under Nine Boys team came third overall, being only a handful of points behind the winners. Lewis in Year 4 achieved second place overall as an individual and Paolo, also from Year 4, achieved fifth. Daniel, a Year 5 pupil, put in three very good runs and was awarded third place in the overall individual positions.
The Under Nine Girls team excelled themselves becoming championship winners with star performances from many of the team including Megan, Bethany and Rebecca, all from Year 4. Megan was awarded third place in the overall individual positions. Bethany achieved fifth and Rebecca eight.
For the first time this year a Cross Country Grand Prix was held at East Cheshire Harriers. The event was organised by the Tameside Athletics Development Group, East Cheshire Harriers and Tameside Athletics Club. Primary schools from all over Tameside participated in the race series.
Many of the pupils from our school were involved and gave up their time on Saturday mornings to compete. The children had trained hard for the event during stamina training and athletics sessions at school. Their training and perseverance paid dividends - our school ran to glory! The children were overall winners of the series in three out of four categories - under nine girls, under nine boys and under eleven girls.
In the under nine girls team there were many star performances as virtually all the girls achieved positions within the top ten or top twenty with Megan and Bethany winning individual medals. The under nine boys were also superstars. They also had many runners finishing in the top ten or twenty with great performances from Paolo and Sam. Lewis was especially outstanding achieving two first place finishes and a second place finish. In the under eleven girls team Alex and Chloe had especially good races and again many other girls were in the top twenty. The under eleven boys put in a great effort just missing out on third place. Daniel, Wojciech and Adam ran especially well.
All the children had a great time and were highly delighted with their success. They were well supported by parents and friends who cheered all the runners on.
