Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School, Ashton under Lyne

Sport: Athletics Club

We have a new addition to our after-school sports events - a school athletics club.

The club is held every Thursday between 3.15 pm and 4.15 pm. During suitable weather there are also sessions run on the school field during lunch time.

Children attending the club are learning a wide range of athletics skills - sprints, hurdles, javelin, shot put, long jump, high jump, triple jump, and many others.

Children are also learning effective baton changing for relays, various "start" positions for racing, and a whole host of other skills to help them fine tune their athletic abilities.

There is an award scheme that pupils are working their way through, both for indoor and outdoor events. The scheme is the ESSA - an officially recognised scheme that is open to primary schools throughout the UK.

Once the children have achieved various times and distances they receive relevant awards, working their way through from bronze to gold.

The after school sessions are run by Mrs Lawrence from Year 4 and Danny Kevan. Danny is a fully qualified athletics coach and we are very lucky to have Danny working with the children in our school.

Everyone has great fun at the sessions and have come on in leaps and bounds with their athletics skills.
