We had a fabulous end to our 2009 Athletics Season! Our school athletics team ended the season with a week of double success!
Earlier in the year they had set the bar by getting through to the finals and coming away with the third place trophy at the indoor athletics competition, "Off the Blocks".
This week they built on their success even further achieving a team gold at the Catholic Schools Athletics and a team silver at the Tameside Quad Kids!
Tameside Catholic Schools Athletics Tournament - Thursday 9th July 2009
Sixteen of our athletes entered this competition in which they were able to focus on their specialist events.
Nwabisa was awarded a gold medal for winning the girls throwing; Lucy achieved silver in the 75m sprint; Daniel won a well fought silver in the 600m while Lewis L was close on his tail bringing home a bronze; Lewis P leapt into a bronze finish in the standing long jump; the relay squad - Adam, Butchelle, Lucy and Idreece brought home the bronze.
The team clocked up 70 points in total placing them at the top of the heap in both the small and large school categories. To achieve this took a great team effort which included many excellent times and distances from team members including Megan, Denver, Gregory, Madison, Helen, Shayne, Shannon and Kieran.
Tameside Quad Kids Athletics Tournament - Friday 10th July 2009
Quad Kids is a new initiative in Tameside Sports. The children compete in four different disciplines - vortex throw, standing long jump, 75m sprint and a 600m run.
The event took place over several days with our school competing in the last session on Friday. Our team consisted of four girls and four boys who had been training in all the disciplines throughout the season. All their finishes on the day were converted to points and totalled together. This is a tough competition in which the best young athletes in Tameside compete.
Our children put in sterling performances and as a result achieved the second place team silver. Daniel was especially outstanding - he had a 25m lead as he came down the home straight in the 600m race. His time placed him as the third fastest boy in Tameside at this distance.
Fabulous finishes also came from Lucy, Shannon, Madison, Helen, Adam, Lewis P and Idreece.
The team have not achieved these outstanding results without having to put in hours of hard work. They train every week at the after school Athletics Club and have given many hours throughout the year during lunchtime sessions. Quite a number of the children also train at East Cheshire Harriers where they are able to fine tune their skills even further.
If you are interested in finding out more about the after school Athletics Club please see Mrs Lawrence in Year 4. Also, have a chat with Lewis and Paolo, our Sports Ambassadors for East Cheshire Harriers.
A round of applause also goes to all the parents who have supported the team throughout the year!
