On Wednesday 30th January, we had a special visitor in school!
Sister Dominic Savio, a sister of the Cross and Passion Order, came to take an assembly about their foundress Elizabeth Prout. Elizabeth Prout was well-known in Ashon for forming the first school at St Ann's our Parish Church in Burlington Street.
Sister Dominic told us all about the first school to be set up at St Ann's. We heard how over 300 children went to the one room school with no books, slates or means of writing.
In spite of the dreadful poverty, the children loved Elizabeth and she did her best to help them learn. A school inspector remarked at the time that the children loved their teacher but he could not give the school a grant because it was so poor. What a dreadful thing to happen!
Sr Dominic told us that the order is hoping that Elizabeth Prout will become a Saint. She told us to pray to Elizabeth, who is particulary good at sorting out things that break down and passing exams.
So we at Our Lady's will all be busy praying to Elizabeth at exam times, and don't forget her when the washing machine breaks down!!!!!
