Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School, Ashton under Lyne

School News 2001

In March 2001, the Quantum Theatre Company visited the school to perform "The Missing Link".

The children celebrated Easter 2001 with an Easter Bonnet Parade and Disco.

In April 2001, the school presented a special tricycle to Ashley's brother Nathan. The children raised £789 to buy the cycle by having a disco, non-uniform day and tuck shop. Two year old Nathan has cerebral palsy and the cycle will help him to move around.

A very happy boy.

During the first half of 2001, the school had suffered a considerable amount of vandalism, especially to the roof. During the Summer term a security fence was errected around the school grounds which has stopped the problem.

Pupils from Years 5 and 6 went to Tameside Hippodrome in September to see Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". This was performed by Shakespeare4kidz, part of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Year 6 visited Styal Mill in Cheshire in September as part of their study of Victorian history.

Years 1 and 2 visited Eureka, the Children's Museum, in Halifax in October.

Teams of children from school took part in the Tameside Catholic Schools' Cross Country competitions held in October and November. We are pleased to say that Jamie Walsh (Year 4) was the overall winner in the under-nine girls' competition.

A special charity concert in aid of the school was held on November 2nd 2001 at Evans Street Band Club. This was very kindly arranged by the grandparents of one of our pupils. The event raised £500 which will also go towards the redecorating of the classrooms following the roof renewal work.

A Christmas Fair was held on Saturday 1st December. Father Christmas was in his grotto supported by his elves. The event raised £1,300 which will go towards the redecorating of the classrooms following the roof renewal work. We thank the pupils, parents and friends of the school for their generous support.
