It is an alarming fact that Tameside has the highest obesity rates in Greater Manchester and one of the highest in the country.

The (1999/2000) NHS survey of 5 year old children in the North West found that 50% of Tameside & Glossop children who were examined were affected by tooth decay. The average for England is 38%.

The 2002/2003 NHS survey of 14 year old children in the North West found that 64% of Tameside & Glossop children were affected by tooth decay. The average for England is 48%.

The "Food in Schools" toolkit (2005) states that, "Poorly nourished children, especially those who are overweight or obese, often experience social and psychological problems. This can clearly have a significant impact on their behaviour and performance in school."

According to the Sodexho School Meals and Lifestyle survey 2005, 8% of children have nothing to eat before school, and this rises to 12% for 15-16 year olds and 17% for 15-16 year old girls. Breakfast clubs can help to change these statistics and give children a healthier start to their day. Read about our Breakfast Club.
