Eco School: Year 5

In July 2009, Year 5 went to visit a landfill site at the Pilsworth recycling plant in Bury, as part of our Geography topic on waste management. We were all amazed to see how huge the landfill site is. We learnt how the methane produced by the rubbish is then turned into electricity (enough for one thousand homes).

We even saw a falcon, which is used to scare of all the seagulls away from the site. We then went into the education centre where we sorted different waste into the correct coloured bins. We finished the day by making our own bags out of old wallpaper and other recycled materials.

Also in July 2009, as part of Green Day, Year 5 went on a nature walk, along the Huddersfield canal to Diggle in Saddleworth.

We got on our local bus to Uppermill, where our walk began at Lock 21W. We followed the towpath for 2miles until we reached Diggle Park (a fantastic themed play area, in the woods).

After lunch we had a delicious luxury ice cream. We then did some pond dipping at the Brownhill countryside centre, before we crossed the stepping stones over the river. Then it was time to go home.
