Eco-Pages - Year 3

Year 3 learned about materials which were suitable for making compost.

Year three had an interesting week finding out about how to compost. Everyone thought Mrs Brennan had gone mad and some of the class thought it would be really boring. BUT IT WAS FUN! Kyle and Stefan came from the recycling centre. They brought a model of a compost bin with a see-through side so we could all see what to put in.

Stefan told us what we can compost in the compost bin. You can compost orange peeling, tea bags, egg shells and boxes.

- Green plant waste
- Brown plant waste
- screwed up paper or cardboard
- tea bags
- orange(not too much) or banana peel
- crushed egg shells

Mix it together or build up in small layers.}
In 9 to 12 months time you will have lovely compost.

We watched a film about mini-beasts and worms and how they help to break down the compost.

Stefan wore a fleece made from recycled plastic. The lesson finished with a composting Quiz.

Here is a poem
Compost needs cracking up,
Compost needs looking after like a pup,
Compost needs a name like you.
Compost is good, but if you don't look after it then,
Compost is bad!

Year 3 couldn't pose with the goat, but they have their certificates instead!

The children in Year3 were special Eco-warriors this Christmas, when they decided not to send as many Christmas cards to each other (in order to save paper and trees). With the money they saved, they bought a goat instead!

They informed Mr Brown that the goat could live on the school field and that it would save Mr Dunstan mowing the grass.

He was not convinced, however, so the goat has gone via CAFOD to help a family who live in a very poor community in another part of the world.

If you are interested in a World gift log on to www.cafod.org.uk and you will find the link there.
