YEAR 4 NEWSLETTER
January – Easter 2009

Happy New Year

Firstly, a few reminders:

Monday – Return homework completed with homework diaries.
Spelling test.
Tuesday – P.E.
Tuesday /Thursday Swimming
Friday – Library books changed.
Hand in Mental Arithmetic books for marking.
Homework given for the weekend.

Ongoing – Reading.
Learning Times-Tables.

P.E. is on Tuesday. Your child needs to wear a yellow top and navy shorts or jogging bottoms.

Swimming is on Thursday; your child needs a towel and swimming trunks/costume.

If for any reason your child is unable to attend PE or swimming, can you please notify me in writing. It is however very important that children attend all these sessions.

Please ensure that your child has a change of footwear for wet days.

Homework -
Please ensure that your child completes and hands in their homework on time.

If they are struggling, please try to help them, but if this is not possible, then please write me a note informing me that they have attempted it then I can go through it with them in school. They are given homework on Friday and this is due in on
Monday, along with their homework diary. They also have mental arithmetic books that they need to work on. These are handed in on Friday each week to be marked.

Spellings – your child has a sheet of spellings for the next half term and these are also written in their homework diaries. Please ensure they practise them for the spelling test on Monday.


Helping children to read -
I would like to hear from any parents who have time to spare to come into school to hear children read.

Topics to be covered during the Spring Term

Religion –
Awarenness of the close relationship between Jesus and God the Father The Our Father. Exploring places of worship. Looking at the human qualities shown by Jesus as he faced death and the feelings of those who closely followed him. Lent. Holy Week.

Numeracy –
Place value, ordering and reading numbers from scales. Addition and subtraction. Money and problems. Measuring. Shape and space. Recognising positions and directions. Number sequencing, odd and even numbers. Greater or less than. Multiplication and division. Fractions. Data handling – interpreting data, bar charts.

Literacy –
Stories about imagined worlds. Science Fiction – fantasy adventure. Classic and modern poetry including poems from different cultures. Information books. Explanatory texts.

Science –
Friction and Forces. Solids, liquids and how they are separated.


Geography –        
India. Overseas locality; physical and human features; similarities and differences. Mapping skills.

Music –
Exploring descriptive sounds and rhythmic patterns.

P.E. –
Basketball. Netball.

I.C.T –
Collecting and presenting information: questionnaires and pie charts. Modelling effects on screen.

Art –
Surrealism – Dali, Anthony Browne, Dream sequences and story boards.

Technology –
Creating a moving storybook using mechanisms – pop-ups, levers, and linkages.
