Year 1 Newsletter Summer Term 2010
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Year 1 will be covering these topics during our Summer Term:
Religion
Spring 1
The children will hear stories of Jesus and his friends after the resurrection and reflect upon the fact, that the church family carries on His work today through the ministry of all the baptised under the guidance of the priest, bishop and Pope.
Spring 2
The children will experience using the Bible to prepare simple liturgies of the Word. We will treat the Bible with reverence and respect and be given the opportunity to handle and look at other religious objects and pictures.
Literacy
- Non-fiction: Information Texts.
- Fiction: Recount
- Poetry: Pattern and rhyme
- Phonics: Phases 3- 5
- Grammar: full stops, commas, speech marks.
- Writing: time words, adjectives, simple sentences, connectives.
- Comprehension: Children answer questions about the story/ paragraph they have read. Children find answers (evidence) in the text.
Number
Oral/Mental Objectives
- To count reliably at least 20 objects.
- To find small differences.
- To count in steps of 3 from 0.
- To order a set of numbers to 20.
- To count in 5s from and back to 0.
- To read and write numerals from 0 to at least 20.
- To recall pairs of numbers which total 10.
- To recall addition doubles up to at least 5 + 5.
- To recall addition and subtraction facts up to 10.
Main Objectives
- To recognise odd & even numbers to 20.
- To say the number that is 1 or 10 more or less than a given number.
- To add more than 2 numbers.
- To compare 2 familiar numbers, say which is more or less and give a number that lies between them.
- To understand the operations of addition and subtraction.
- To recognise that a square stands for an unknown number.
- Money coins up to 20p, finding totals, change from 20p.
- Symmetry: folding 2D shapes in half, repeating patterns using 2D shapes.
- Time: reading the time to half hours on analogue clocks.
Science
Spring 1: Growing Plants
The children will explore some common plants, identify the leaf, root, stem and flower of a plant; recognise that plants are living and need water and light to grow and recognise they can investigate the conditions plants need for growth.
Spring 2: Sound and Hearing
The children will recognise and describe many sounds; describe how sounds are generated by specific objects; state that they hear sounds through their ears; describe what they observe when they move further away from a source of sound; make observations or measurements relating to sounds and with help present these in charts.
History
Summer 1:Toys
The children will look at similarities and differences between toys today and toys in the past. Our children will be introduced to the concepts of 'old' and 'new', and think about the changes in their own lives and in those of their family or adults around them. The approach used in this unit could be applied to the study of other everyday things from the past, eg clothes, games.
Summer 2: Seaside
The children will order objects correctly in chronological sequence; recognise some similarities and differences between holidays now and in the past; collect information about the past by asking questions of people who were alive before the children were born, and from objects and pictures; recognise that there are several ways they can find out about the past; write sentences about seaside holidays in the past, using words related to the passing of time.
Art and Design
What is sculpture?
The children will explore ideas about sculpture; investigate and use materials and processes to communicate ideas and meanings in three-dimensional form; comment on similarities and differences between their own and others' work; adapt and improve their own work.
Design and Technology
Eat more fruit and vegetables
The children will gain an understanding of the properties, including taste, texture and appearance, of a range of fruit and vegetables and then prepare and combine ingredients into a specific product; will use basic tools safely; will recognise that it is important to eat more fruit and vegetables.
ICT
Spring 1: Representing information graphically: pictograms
The children will learn how to use ICT to represent information graphically. They will learn how to create pictograms and how to answer simple questions on the data shown in their pictograms.
Spring 2: Understanding instructions and making things happen
The children will learn how to give and follow instructions to make things happen. They will learn how to sequence instructions, so that others can follow them, and predict what will happen.
POINTS TO REMEMBER:
Monday: Return homework. P.E.
Tuesday: P.E. Please make sure that your child has a P.E. kit on this day.
Thursday: P.E. Bring in Library Books and completed record sheets.
Friday: P.E. Spelling Test, Homework given for the weekend.
Victorian Day: A Victorian costume will be needed for that day. Lots of prizes and games. Date will be agreed soon.
Jewellery and Toys: Please remember our school policy that jewellery and toys are not allowed. Watches may be worn and it would be helpful if you encourage your children to tell the time.
Lateness: Thanks for your support in ensuring your child is punctual in the mornings. This ensures a quick start to our work as lateness can cause not only a disruption to your child’s work, but to the rest of the class.
Illness: If your child is ill, first you need to ring the school in the morning and let us know, otherwise we'll mark as unauthorised.
